Only a few more miles on the treadmill and he would be done for today. Like he did every morning, or almost every morning, he was excersizing in the gym before his shift. He made sure he was in a good physical condition, as he believed that belonged with his job. When the door to the gym opened up again John looked up and saw the Captain walk in. "Morning Captain," he said.
If the Captain had completely woken up before getting to the gym, he failed to show it, as he took a second to pause, and consider who else was in the gym at this hour. As the fog of sleep lifted and things connected, Minawara offered a polite wave and a simple, if still groggy "Hello Lieutenant, how is your morning so far?" Tossing his gym bag into the corner, he went to the supply closet, and withdrew the punching bag from within, dragging it across the facility towards it's hook that hung from the ceiling. It was a slow process, the Captain not still fully awake yet, further accented with a yawn haphazardly covered with his free arm. Lifting it up and clicking it into place, Yoshi set himself aside slightly and began his morning routine of stretches to limber up. More focused and targeted ones on most of his body, with light ones on the metal piece that made his left shoulder down.
He couldn't help but smile when he thought of how his morning had started. "Great," he said. "First real shift today. I did some catching up yesterday and met a few of my team but in a while will be the start of my first shift on the Vesta." He grabbed his towel to wipe some sweat from his brow.
"Well, here is hoping it's quiet for you," replied the Commanding Officer finishing off his stretches. "I'm sure the crew as a whole is hoping for a quieter period here, seeing as how our last few months have gone." Taking a half step back from the punching bag, he lightly placed his fist against the rubbery material of the bag, and did a few slow punches with his left arm, measuring distance in his mind before he recoiled and landed a hard punch on the material. The bag rocked back and forth, as the Captain turned to examine his hand. "No stress, looks like the replacement is working fine," he muttered to himself.
Turning to look at the Lieutenant, Yoshi asked: "What do you think of the Vesta so far then, as you've been settling in?"
John's eyes started to shine. "This ship is amazing, such a difference with the Washington, my earlier posting. She was an older Galaxy-class vessel."
A few thuds echoed through the gym as Yoshi landed a few more solid hits, followed shortly by a roundhouse kick, causing the bag to creak on its chains and shift back and forth. "I always liked the Galaxy-class, I won't lie," replied the Captain, as he planted the foot that had just landed the kick and drove his knee into the bag after. "Lots of room to work, enough of a platform to upgrade to modern systems without issues, and since the leaps in Warp technology have occurred, they are slated for a massive refit with new, more efficient warp designs, less subspace pollution." Now standing on both feet, he turned back to the Lieutenant. "But I am glad you are enjoying the ship. She was a labour of love." Taking a few steps back, he examined the punching bag, as if considering the design of it, before landing another few short series of hits. "So, any plans for your department that I should have to consider?"
"Honestly, I don't know yet. It depends on what my predecessor has done. Which I will know in a few days. I plan to go through reports and do some training exercises. And of course, talk to my crew. But from what I've seen so far they look like a good team." John said.
"I would agree. Lieutenant Darrow left the team in a combat-ready stance, and they have performed well, all things taken into account. It will be nice to have things back in order since her departure, so I hope everything goes smoothly. If there is anything you need, just let me know Lieutenant," said the Captain with a smile, looking toward the man. "She's a fine ship, with a fine crew, I am sure you will find a lot to work with."
"May I ask why Lt. Darrow left?" He hadn't been able to find any information on his predecessor. "I don't want to pry, but her departure might effect the team." He didn't say he wanted to know if he would be accepted by the team or if he had to fight for their loyalty.
"Ms. Darrow departed due to the nature of the accident that propelled us into the future. While we were saddened to see her go, it was not unexpected, nor was she the only one," replied the Captain, a tinge of sorrow colouring his words. "Many of your department are new to this vessel, which is expected considering the event itself. You will find many new faces here, so don't worry too much about misplaced loyalty."
John released the breath he was apparently holding. "That's good to know," He turned the treadmill to a slower speed to start his cool down. "I can't wait to really get started."
"Don't worry, we'll be putting you through the paces soon enough Lieutenant," Yoshi said with a smile, as he landed a few more punches, and stopped, staring down at his hand with a frown. "If you have any other questions I'll have to catch you a little later,I have something to take care of here quick." The man approached his own kit on the side and scooped it up quickly. He paused at the door, and offered a smile, "Welcome Lieutenant, we're excited to have you." With that, he disappeared into the hallway at a quick pace.
John stepped off the treadmill, grabbed his stuff and also left the gym.
