| Physical Description | Being of mixed heritage, Zhed possesses physical characteristics of both his parent species. He is furred everywhere but around the face and hands, with both skin and hair being an orange-brown in color with tan highlights. His digitigrade stance, large-pawed feet and tail come from his Kzinti side, while the vertical orientation of his mouth and six tentacle-like tongues are clearly Juran-Ti. His ears are large, finned and sensitive. The combination of his Kzinti teeth and Juran-Ti tongues have been described by academy classmates as 'Nightmare fuel', and as such, Zhed typically eats alone. The tip of his tail is slightly matted and scarred; not from combat, but from his cat. As with other Juran-Ti, Zhed expresses his moods and emotions primarily through his eyes and ears, though thanks to Kzinti heritage, he's also rather expressive through the movements of his tail. |

| General Overview | Zhederious is generally a friendly enough individual, though he tends to play things close to the vest until he gets to know people. Due to his own upbringing, he can be a bit sensitive about his own appearance, and fiercely defensive if he encounters someone being bullied or harassed due to their own looks. | |
| Strengths & Weaknesses | +Fiercely loyal to those who have earned his loyalty +Intelligent and perceptive of his surroundings -Has a somewhat short fuse, and is quick to anger or lose his temper. Has been known to bite. -Can become annoyed and frustrated when encountering new things or situations that don't work out as expected. -If his trust is deliberately betrayed, it can be very difficult for someone to earn it back. |
|
| Ambitions | Zhed doesn't have grand aspirations for commanding his own ship, or running a department of a thousand people or anything of that nature. Mostly he's just grateful for a place where, even if he doesn't fit in, he at least won't stand out quite so much. He's also aware that many, many people out there, either part of Starfleet or not, are incredibly naive and need to be protected; especially including his superior officers. And that's his job, to be the thin |
|
| Hobbies & Interests | Zhed first pursued studies in engineering due to having a knack with machines and computers, though later switched his major to security when his temper claimed a fifth computer console during a difficult semester at the Academy. He still tinkers on and off, though tries to keep it casual and low-stress. | |
| Languages | Kzinti, Federation Standard, and Juran-Ti dialects: Kezet-Central, Kezet-Formal, Digger and Pusqui. |
| Personal History | Neither the Kzinti nor the Juran-Ti dabble in extraneous genetic manipulation, though medical assistance was definitely required when Zhederious' parents decided to have a child. As a result of the difficulties, Zhed grew up as their only offspring, and in a sense, the only one of his kind. He grew up on Juranis IV, where his half-Kzinti appearance really didn't fit with their spiritual perceptions on what a 'proper' Juran-Ti should look like. They were civilized enough that there were never any lynch mobs or cries to exile him off the planet, but he always knew he was different, and it was rare that anyone would ever try to correct that perception. Once Zhed learned of Starfleet and that it was a multi-species organization that didn't care so much what one looked like, it seemed like a natural fit. And when he started expressing interest in joining, he was encouraged to pursue the opportunity, and some time and additional experience, was granted admission to Starfleet Academy. His temper got him into trouble a few times during his Academy years, but for the most part he applied himself and got acceptable grades. Yuran-Ti History: A little over one hundred and fifty years ago, the Juran-Ti were spreading out through their solar system utilizing sublight technology, establishing a number of outposts and settlements on other moons within the system, though no planets outside of Juranis IV were habitable. In the midst of this time of expansion, First Contact was made with the Ferengi Alliance, who provided them (for a considerable price) with the technology to travel faster than light. As expected, the introduction of such a technology changed their society overnight, for both better and worse. While science and exploration surged ahead, so too did the less savory elements of their society, and as they started to spread out from their little corner of the galaxy, smugglers and pirates were unfortunately among the first 'Ambassadors' that many other races would see. Excepting of course most of the outlaw elements, many of the Juran-Ti people are highly spiritual, following a belief of shifting balance in the universe, of the ebb and flow of fortune, both good and bad; a very crude interpretation would be 'Nothing Bad Lasts Forever', coupled with 'All Good Things Must Come To An End'. True Traditionalists also believe the Juran-Ti to be the first, true people in the universe (and True Believers are rarely swayed by pesky notions such as 'facts' and 'evidence to the contrary') and often offer opposition in matters of government policy that relate to dealings with other races, inalienable rights, and anything that might (in their minds) 'pollute' Juran-Ti racial purity. The fact that it's difficult for Juran-Ti to procreate with other races only serves to further convince the Traditionalists that they're Right. In general, current Juran-Ti technology is equivalent to early twenty-third century Earth, though with exceptions given their relationships and trade status with the Federation, Ferengi Alliance, and other intergalactic neighbors. Largely confined to their own solar system, with legitimate settlements in a half dozen star systems and an unknown number of bases of operation of different pirate and smuggler groups, there has never been a need for a large-scale space fleet, though they do have a considerable police force to try and keep the piracy in check. In spite of relative proximity (galactically speaking) to the Federation border and Bajoran section, the Juranis system was largely left alone during the war between the Dominion and the Alpha Quadrant, mostly due to a lack of any serious strategic importance in the star system and their decision to remain neutral and unaffiliated with either side. In this, both the legitimate government and the various pirate organizations were in agreement; after all, they all knew what happened to the Maquis at the hands of the Cardassians and their Dominion allies, and if the Dominion turned its attention to the Juranis system, there wouldn't be a lot any of them could do to resist. Juranis IV remains too far outside the Federation's current sphere of influence to be a potential candidate for membership, though they're close enough to the Federation border for regular trade and contact, with a great many Juran-Ti travelling through Federation territory on legitimate -and sometimes illegal- business. Biologically, having evolved on a somewhat swampy but otherwise class-M world, Juran-Ti are oxygen-breathing, bipedal humanoids with the typical two arms and two legs, plantigrade stance, and five digits per hand and foot. Hairless, their skin varies from grey to orange, with pale and raised, speckled markings down the limbs and digits, and about the ears, temples and cheeks of the face. Ears are larger and finlike, sensitive to a greater range of higher-frequency sound than humans, with slightly decreased sensitivity in the low range. Pupils of the eye are vertically slitted and adapted to function underwater, though are on par with humans as far as viewable spectrum and sensitivity. More unusual is the atypical structuring of the Juran-Ti mouth, with two hinged jaws in a vertical orientation. Lined with teeth suited for omnivorous consumption, Juran-Ti are capable and comfortable eating most everything that other humanoids eat (except Bolians with their cartilaginous tongues that can practically eat battery acid) though they evolved to consume small fish and similarly sized prey. Unlike most humanoids, they also possess six prehensile tongues (25 - 30 cm's in length) which were historically used to constrict and pull in small prey for consumption. Interestingly, the multiple Juran-Ti tongues also offer an advantage when it comes to speaking alien languages; learning a new language is no easier for them than it is for most other species, but the multiple tongues and oral structure allows them to more easily duplicate the phonetics of most verbal languages. A Juran-Ti who becomes fluent in a language can usually eliminate their own accent within six to ten months. Juranis IV has more than forty indigenous dialects, though the most prevalent is Kezet-Formal, for general use among Juran-Ti, and Kezet-Central, which is a simplified version of Formal, that non-natives are generally more capable of articulating successfully. |

| Service Record | Service Record: 2385-2388 - Attended the Technical Institute of Applied Technologies on Juranis IV. Graduated in the top 30% of his classes 2388-2389 - Served aboard the independent trade vessel SS Hampton (Hammy) as an intern cargo handler, gaining experience as he kept trying to apply to Starfleet Academy 2389 - After the captain of the Hampton submitted a recommendation on his behalf, Zhed's Academy application was accepted. 2389-2390 - Attended Starfleet Academy. Due to confrontations and other issues arising due to his temper, Zhed began attending voluntary counseling sessions. Shortly after, he decided to change his career path, and switched instead to security, which seemed a slightly better fit for his particular temperament. 2390-2394 - Attended and graduated from Starfleet Academy. Granted the rank of Ensign 2394 - Posted to the science vessel USS Charon as a security officer 2396 - Promoted to Lieutenant Junior-Grade 2397 - Was transferred to the USS Bainbridge as a security officer due to an accidental biting incident with the chief medical officer aboard the Charon. No charges were pressed. 2398 - Requested and received a transfer off of the USS Bainsbridge following friction with a deeply Traditionalist Juran-Ti diplomat onboard that took exception to his 'bastard' genealogy. Knowing how deep-seated those beliefs were, and the importance of the mission at hand, it was simply easier for him to request a transfer than to walk on eggshells around the ship and try not to cross paths. 2398 - Transfer to the USS Vesta approved. |
