Ensign Hakunetsuno (Hakune) Hinkyaku

Name Hakunetsuno (Hakune) Hinkyaku

Position Medical Officer

Rank Ensign

Character Information

Gender Female
Homeworld Rocksnot, Sol system (birth); Ginnae, Ailuriates system
Species Elix
Date of Birth 15 September 2374
Age 24

Physical Appearance

Height 5' 11
Weight 150 lbs
Hair Color Blonde
Eye Color Blue-grey
Physical Description Although she stands from head to toe at almost 6 feet, Hakunetsuno carries herself as though she is self-conscious about being short. Therefore, she rarely stands with her chin down, even when told to relax.
She is slender and light in build, but it is still fairly obvious that her life thus far has involved long hours of physical exercise through manual labor.
Her blonde hair is very long when worn loose, but is normally seen worn in an intricate braid which keeps it well off the shoulder, which appears to be the result of several minutes preparation.
Her legs are somewhat lacking in apparent musculature, appearing almost bird-like, but which terminate in paw-like feet. They are digitigrade... what appears to be a reversed "lower knee" is, in fact, her ankle, and the section of her leg that run down to those paws is roughly 18 inches in length.
The most dominant part of her visage, however, is a prodigious set of feathery wings which arch an easy foot above the top of her head. Fully extended, the primary pair have a wingspan of roughly 7 meters from tip to tip, while the secondary pair have a wingspan of just under 3 meters. The former are covered with pure white feathers, while the latter are shot through with colors including light blues and greens. These wings and feathers are fastidiously groomed and appear to be a source of pride.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Although she has always been quite shy on a personal level, Hakunetsuno takes her role as a representative of her people within a cultural exchange with the Federation extremely seriously. Consequently, she can speak quite confidently about topics that are impersonal to her, but stumbles when the topic of conversation turns to her personal life, her relationships or opinions of others. She can discuss some aspects of her past in an academic way. While she is generally friendly, she is not particularly open, and is particularly cagey about forming any sort of romantic relationships with anyone but her own kind. Even though she is only in her twenties herself, she has been made well aware of the emotional pain that would await her if she opened herself up to doing so, in that she would almost certainly have to watch, as she outlives several generations of companions, whilst barely aging at all herself.
Her efforts to prevent this can sometimes be misinterpreted as cold disinterest, even open hostility if pressed. It is not that she has no natural disinterest, far from it, it is more out of desperation not to experience the negative consequences of her longevity, which is long enough that most species that are aware of the Elixae falsely believe them to be immortal.
She is estranged from her family, to the point that she offers no reaction to contact with her parents whatsoever. This is because she has no memories of them whatsoever.
Strengths & Weaknesses Two tanae disciplines:
Life-binding: an ability that, given another 200 years training, will allow Hakune to bind the life-essence of a person within their body, effectively placing a floor to the level below which a person's medical condition cannot deteriorate while the binding is in place. At her current level of training, however, Life-binding provides her with the ability to reduce a subject's level of pain, by taking an equal share of it upon herself. She can maintain this for up to two subjects simultaneously.
Dream-walking: a telepathic ability allowing her to induce sleep and enter the dreams of a WILLING subject, where she is able to share the dream's environment. Within the dream, she is able to fluently communicate with the subject in their most fluent language, regardless of her knowledge of it, as it is part of the dream's environment. During the dream-walk, she remains fully aware of the real-world environment, but cannot act within it without first breaking the dream-walk.
Wing-based flight: Physical ability to fly, but requires enough space to extend her wings and have airflow over them.
Powerful eyesight: Evolved from aerial predators, the Elixi visual field is parabolic, progressively magnifying from 1x on the periphery to roughly 500x at the point of focus.

Cannot swim: While her wings allow her to fly quite literally like a bird, Hakune's wings also soak up a LOT of water if immersed. An illustration of this came during her first Physical Aptitude assessment at Starfleet Academy, where swimming was involved. Having had to be pushed into the pool, she immediately sank to the bottom due to the amount of weight added to her wings by the water. It took 4 divers to bring her to the surface, and a note of dispensation was added to her record.
Has difficulty running: Again because of her wings, Hakune finds running, or even jogging, without breaking into flight, to be something of an issue. Her wings are extremely efficient at generating lift, and so running is very uncomfortable.
Fear of the dark: Hakune spent her entire childhood living on a planet in a binary system, where the planet was positioned between the stars. As a result, the planet experiences nothing resembling the darkness of night.
Brutal Honesty: Hakune was raised by a former member of the elixi Warrior caste, and never really learned the art of diplomatic lying. While she knows that it is better to not answer a question where the answer is a cruel one, she cannot help answering a question from someone higher in her chain of command truthfully

To return to Ginnae to continue her tanae training

Personal History Born in the elix's Sol Observation Station on the planetoid of Rocksnot (2013 GV136) in Sol's Kuiper Belt, Hakunetsuno is considered unique among the Elixae in a couple of ways. No other Elix has ever been born outside the territory of the Elixi core systems. The other unique aspect is that, a malfunction in the FTL drive on the admittedly under-maintained ship that was being used to transport her mother back to the Core Systems in time for her birth, caused stresses upon the unborn child, which resulted in her to manifest bioluminescence in utero. Always an exceedingly rare trait, such bioluminescence usually first manifests between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, centred around the time of fledging. In utero manifestation of bioluminescence had only been seen once before. More than a minor physiological quirk among elixae, it is an indicator of increased psionic capacity, taking it from the level of a scientific curiosity to, with proper training, a variety of disciplines with practical application. Those elixae that manifest are uplifted from their families within days of being reported, and taken to monesteries where that training is provided over the course of several decades. In recognition of the sacrifice made by those families, they are elevated within society to the lesser nobility, or elevated a tier of nobility if already in the aristocracy, while the children themselves are placed firmly in the priestly caste, affording them status beyond the authority of civilian government.
Life in the monasteries, however, is highly regimented, with almost every hour of every day closely assigned tasks aimed largely at instilling a deep self-discipline, a degree of independence, an appreciation for the contributions of others, and perhaps most importantly, an abiding humility. It was with all but a few days of her life under this regimen, that the 18-year-old Hakunetsuno was summoned by the monestery's abbot to learn that she had been nominated by the Elixi government to be their delegate in a proposed cultural exchange. Despite her protestations about how unprepared she was for any sort of life outside the cloister, the abbot dismissed her concerns, stating that he had known about the request for several years already, and had seen to it that her training included elements typically reserved for those who were ready to be assigned to various communities throughout Elixi space. He also pointed out that, having been born out in the Periphery (the name given to those systems outside the Core), the assumption was that she was most like the people of the Federation that could be found. While it was an entirely specious argument, it was also one she could not come up with a counter to... not least of all because it had come from the abbot, the highest authority to whom she had ever answered. Had the case been made to her by her Dean or even by the Prior, she would have the Abbot to appeal to... but this came from the Abbot himself... it might just as well have come from the Deities themselves. With that said, it was not without a flood of tears that, 3 days later, she boarded a small courier craft with the meager possessions of a cloistered priestess, bound to return to the system of her birth, far from anything and everything that she knew.
Upon her arrival, she headed immediately to Starfleet Academy, whom she had been told were expecting her.
Given her skillset, she was assigned onto the Medical path, and given a berth in student accommodation, which she shared with a young Vulcan woman who was studying to become a Linguistics specialist. Over the next few months, they became friends, and tried to teach each other their native languages. While Hakune quickly mastered the Vulcan language in that time, the multivocal nature of the Elixi language made anything more than understanding it (such as speaking it) impossible for her friend.
At the end of her four years of Starfleet training, Hakune decided to specialize in psychology in the required 2 years in Starfleet's Medical Academy, as she was fascinated by the way that the differences in the minds of members of a species was much greater than the differences in their bodies.
